A new study suggests that a pill may be the way to treat erectile dysfunction. Researchers in the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIR) in Toronto tested the hypothesis that a combination of two common drugs, sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) and sildenafil citrate (the same ingredient in Cialis), could be effective.
The research was presented at the Canadian Institute of Health Research in Toronto by a researcher with experience in cardiovascular health. The researchers used a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial design with a crossover design with 3 months of follow-up.
The researchers recruited participants of both the male and female participants, who were between the ages of 18 and 41 years, and then randomly assigned participants to receive either sildenafil (25mg) or sildenafil citrate (50mg).
The primary endpoint was the change from baseline to the next follow-up. The investigators used intention-to-treat analysis as the primary analysis. The other secondary analysis used a Cox proportional hazards model. This analysis was conducted after adjusting for baseline characteristics.
The researchers observed that the men who received sildenafil had a statistically significantly higher reduction in the change in the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) from baseline to the next follow-up, compared to those who received sildenafil citrate. This is the first study to test the hypothesis that sildenafil and sildenafil citrate can be used as treatments for erectile dysfunction.
The results were consistent with a placebo effect. The men who received sildenafil had a statistically significantly higher reduction in the score on the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) from baseline to the next follow-up, compared to those who received sildenafil citrate. This was also the first study to test the hypothesis that sildenafil and sildenafil citrate can be used as treatments for erectile dysfunction.
The researchers concluded that sildenafil and sildenafil citrate are equally effective in treating erectile dysfunction. The men who received sildenafil had a statistically significantly higher reduction in the score on the IIEF from baseline to the next follow-up, compared to those who received sildenafil citrate.
